Fluoride Varnish – A Smile Saver

What is fluoride varnish?

·       It is fluoride in a resin or polyurethane base (varnish)

How is it applied?

·       It is painted on the teeth with a small disposable brush

Why is it used?

·       It is used to prevent cavities & even reverse the damage of an area of a tooth where a cavity is just beginning to form

Who should get fluoride varnish?

·       Anyone who is at risk for getting tooth decay.  Some risk factors for tooth decay are:

1.    Has had tooth decay already (1 or more cavities)

2.    Has white spots on teeth

3.    Has a parent with a history of tooth decay (cavities, filled or unfilled)

4.    Has unlimited access to drinking liquids other than water (soda, sports drinks, Kool-aid, juice, milk)

5.    Is a person with disabilities

Fluoride varnish is both safe & beneficial for all ages (infants, toddlers, children, teens & adults)

Announcing the STARS Program!

                          Marion County Ambulance District

Dear District Resident/ Parents or Guardians of a Special Needs Child:

We want to inform you of a new program we have implemented at Marion County Ambulance District that will enable us to be better prepared to take care of special needs children ages 0-18 years old should an emergency arise. The program is titled S.T.A.R.S (Special needs Tracking, and Awareness Response System). Each child that is entered into S.T.A.R.S. has a form detailing his or her medical history, medications, allergies, baseline vital signs, baseline neurological status, and common medical emergencies that is kept in each ambulance. A number is assigned to each child that matches the form. Should you need to call 911, the caller gives the dispatcher the number which is then relayed to the responding ambulance. Having this information at hand can prove vital, especially when a regular caretaker is not present. Please contact us if you feel your child would be a candidate. Children who especially benefit are those with significant developmental delay, seizure disorders, cardiac history, cerebral shunts, tracheotomies, and any atypical diseases or syndromes. To enroll your child, a paramedic from Marion County Ambulance District will make an appointment to come to your home or you may come to the district to discuss your child’s needs, fill out the S.T.A.R.S form, and answer any questions you may have about our services. At this time, if your child has any anxiety about the ambulance and would like to tour it or see any equipment, he or she is encouraged to do so.

Marion County Services is...

 Marion County Services for the Developmentally Disabled is...

 a local government entity, Commonly known as a Senate Bill 40 Board, responsible for the administering county tax funds for the development and operation of services for the individuals with developmental disabilities. In 1988 the citizens of Marion County approved a tax levy that would be used for those with developmental disabilities.

 

Our continuing mission is

"To Increase Choice, Respect, Ability, and Involvement for the Developmentally Disabled Citizens of Marion County."

Eligibility

Marion County Services for the Developmentally

Disabled is a local governmental entity commonly known as a Senate Bill 40 Board responsible for

administering county tax funds for the development and operation of services for the individuals with

developmental disabilities. In 1988, the citizens of Marion County approved a tax levy that would be used exclusivity for those with developmental

disabilities.

Marion County residents and family members with a developmental disability, such as autism, cerebral palsy, congenital disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, epilepsy (and other seizure disorders), and mental retardation, are eligible for the services.

To be eligible for services, an individual must have a disability:

- A mental or physical disability that began before the age of 22.

- Likely to continue indefinitely

- Results in major problems with two or more of the following:

- Living and working independently

- Communication

- Self direction

- Learning

- Mobility

- Self-care

Our Services Include

- Assistance with the purchases of adaptive equipment for those without Medicaid or other coverage

- Funding for parents to attend conferences and seminars relating to their child’s disability.

Programs

-Bridges Day Habilitation Program is a day activity and training program that teaches personal care, and community and pre-employment skills to young adults with multiple disabilities.

- Community Integration is provided to individuals who live at home or in a group setting. It supports independent activities and decision making while teaching the skills necessary to live and work in one’s own neighborhood.

- Independent Support Living provides supervision and training for individualized support living      arrangements for men and women with severe disabilities. The residences, each serving no more than three people, are integrated in the neighborhoods of the community and are provided through a contract with Department of Mental Health.

- Transportation is provided to individuals employed at the Northeast Missouri and Monroe City Sheltered Workshops as well as a variety of supported employment work sites. MCSDD operates a daily transportation route with door-to-door services in Palmyra and Hannibal.

- Respite Care provides funding for families to   purchase attendant services to enable them to attend a personal business and other concerns and is provided through a joint effort with the  Hannibal Regional Office

Recreation

- Silver and Gold Summer Day Camp serves children enrolled in special education classes for grades 1 through 12. the camp provides supervised recreation activities for children who would otherwise be unable to attend camp due to the severity of their disabilities.

- Athlete’s Day brings opportunity to compete in various track style events. Disabled athletes from near and far compete in this popular event that is held annually.

- Consumer Night Out makes local events available after hours.

- Special Olympics events are made available for those eligible. Participants are engaged in local district, regional, and state events through Special Olympics of Missouri.

- Camp Yagattawanna is a weekend camp near Florida, Missouri. Several recreational events are offered and the opportunity to make new friends.

Support Coordination

- In July, 2008 Marion County Services and the Department of Mental Health entered into a partnership to provide local support coordination.

- In July of 2010, Marion County Services took over support coordination completely.

Enhancing People's Lives

In May, 2004 Marion County Services of the Developmentally Disabled received a Three-Year Accreditation by CARF and again in 2007, 2010, and 2013 for the following services:

- Community Housing

- Community Integration

- Supported Living

Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, Inc (CARF) recognizes organizations that achieve accreditation through a consultative peer-review process and that demonstrates their commitment to the continuous improvement of their programs and services with focus on the needs and outcomes of the person served.

MCSDD mirrors the values of CARF by believing in following core values:
